1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 25And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Paul is encouraging the saints to remain faithful comparing our race and fight in this life of service for Christ to a worldly athlete in that they prepare and keep fit and strive to win. It is often mistaken that Paul is speaking of a competition; that is not the case. Many rewards await the saint who faithfully serves. Every saint is just as eligible to receive them according to their service. Some are described as crowns.

2 Timothy 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

The elders that feed the flock properly with receive a crown of glory.

1Peter 5:1-4 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. 4And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

“Lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway”, This is not speakin of losing salvation but being a castaway at the Judgment Seat of Christ and losing the crowns.
