Is Hell Literal and Forever?

I am often asked whether hell is literal and is it forever?

Isaiah 66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

The Lord comments on how horrible it is to be cast into hell.

Mark 9:43-48 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 47And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: 48Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

I am not sure that the Lord could have made it any plainer. Hell is real and forever. We who have trusted in Christ Jesus to the saving of our souls need to witness to others of this horrible fate. It is the reason we are left here.

Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The corruption of man is so great that if they think that the consequence of rejecting God and his salvation will be less than eternal or just some separation from God, they will not fear nor see the need or urgency in salvation. Even if they think that burning in the lake of fire will not be for eternity, they will imagine coming out the other side and thumbing their nose at God saying, “Is that all you got?”

We have an eternal God and to reject and rebel against him is to spit in his face and wish he were dead. Eternal damnation is the only proper consequence to such. As long as the God you rejected lives, you will suffer his wrath.
