I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

John 15:1-2

The Lord is instructing and making a comparison between the lost and the saved. Those that reject Christ are the branches that are broken off.

John 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

This discourse is taking place at the last supper beginning at chapter 13:1 and given to his apostles and disciples. Here he explains he is going away and that he will send them a comforter, the Holy Spirit.

John 15:26-27 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

It does not have anything to do with losing salvation, but either accepting it or rejecting it.
