1 Corinthians 6:12 & 1 Corinthians 10:23

1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

1 Corinthians 6:12

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

1 Corinthians 10:23

If you read the context of the chapters it will be taken that these verses are part of a warning to the saints not to use their liberty in Christ, once saved, always saved, as an occasion to violated God’s laws and commandments.

Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

1 Peter 2:16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

We are dead to the law in Christ, that is, being dead the law has no more power to condemn us. “All things are lawful,” as we are not in bondage to the law. However, there are a couple of big “BUTs” in the verses. We were saved to a purpose and although all things are lawful, all do are not expedient to our purpose of serving God and being a witness to the lost.

Even though the law cannot damn us, we still have to stand before the judgment seat of Christ and receive our rewards whether for good or for bad

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Christianity is not a free ride to do whatever you want, as we are warned in the verses under question. In fact, it is the most demanding of religions. One has to choose and do righteously of one’s own accord not being herded, constrained, or protected, by laws and ordinances. Many times selfless acts against your own benefit are required. Ultimately, we are required to give up everything, even our lives, for Christ.

“All things are lawful for” us,
BUT all things are not right for us to do.
