For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Romans 8:13

Some misinterpret Romans 8 failing to realize that Chapters 1-8 do not deal with individuals but sets or groups of people: saved/lost, believers/nonbelievers, Jews/Gentiles, God’s righteousness/the Laws Righteousness. Romans 1-7 explains what salvation is and isn’t: by faith not works, God’s Righteousness/self-righteousness. Chapter 8 is the conclusion or summary of the first seven chapters.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

“Therefore:” because of all that I said in the preceding chapters.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

If you are in Christ Jesus you are dead to the law and therefore cannot be condemned of the law of sin.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The lost walk after the flesh, the saved after the Spirit.

Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

If you have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ, that he was the virgin-born Son of God, that he offered himself to pay for the sins of the world by the death on the cross, that he was buried, and rose again, you were sealed with the Spirit of God.

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Romans 8 continues to address groups or sets: lost or saved, walking after the flesh or the Spirit. No individuals are being discussed in the Book of Romans until Chapter 12.

Romans 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

“After the flesh” = lost; “through the Spirit” = saved.

Without this understanding, the book of Romans has been greatly misinterpreted.

If you are interested, you have the Trinity in Romans chapter 8: Spirit, Spirit of God, Spirit of Christ.
