Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

The subject of this sentence is “Thou”, the singular ‘you’. We know it is singular as it is address to “thyself”, not themselves, “workman” not workmen. Grammar has just been used to determine who is being spoken to. This is an injunction to each individual believer in Christ. We are all supposed to study the “word of truth” to be able to “rightly divide” it.

The command, and it is a command, does not provide instruction on what to study. It must be concluded that we are to study whatever is needed to “rightly divide the word of truth”, the Scriptures. Naturally, the study of the Bible itself is paramount to be able to compare Scripture with Scripture.

1 Corinthians 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

A certain amount of history as well is helpful in determining correct placement of events. But, An understanding and ability to use basic grammar is a necessity to understanding the Bible. As an example examine Ephesians 2:8-9. It is amazing how many false teachings are based on faulty grammar.

Obtaining a working knowledge of basic grammar is not difficult. I recommend as a place to start the following.
