Draw nigh to God,
and he will draw nigh to you.
Cleanse your hands, ye sinners;
and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

James 4:8

If you have not trusted in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, I would start with that.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

If you have trusted in Christ and trying to draw closer to God, I suggest you cannot grow closer to or get to know God if you do not know what he thinks about things. Get to know him by reading his word. I further suggest the King James Version.

1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

You must understand that if you do not know God’s word you will sin continually throughout your day. If you are just doing what you think is right and good and not what God says is right and good you are glorifying yourself and not God. Even if you happen to be doing what God said it would just be consequential giving no glory to God. That is what Eve’s sin was, to know good and evil for herself and not need God to tell her.

Genesis 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

You will find that the Bible is written in layers. The first is easy, plain, simple, and you should not have any trouble understanding it. It contains the basic thou shalt and thou shalt not’s; Do not kill, steal, rape, pillage, burn, gossip, defame, plus some do’s tossed in.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

There is much more, too much for me to try and list here, but the first layer is easily understood especially when it comes to salvation.

Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

That last one you will notice is all one-syllable words; You cannot write it any simpler and clearer than that.

The second layer goes into more detail and begins to add in twist to mess with those whose hearts are not right or will not spend the energy or time to diligently study.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Faith, got to have faith, “without faith it is impossible to please him.”

Romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

After this it is just a test of your desire and commitment to study and live his word.
